TIGRAN HAMASYAN: LEVITATION 21 | REVIEW

– GUERRILLA WARFARE –

Armenian piano-pounder Tigran Hamasyan unveils the first single from his upcoming album The Call Within. And, for those familiar with his work, you’ll find absolutely nothing familiar about Levitation 21; which is exactly how we Hamasyan-fans like it.

While generally renowned for melding the music of his native country with jazz, part of the joy of Levitation 21 is the hints of electronica and even metal that lie within.

Supplant some of the piano lines onto an electric guitar and you could imagine Zak Wylde shredding them. Similarly, programme the beats into a drum machine and this could be Aphex Twin.

The result is a track that is full of life and energy and experimentation and… notes. Fucking loads of them.

And it’ll go by so fast it’ll make you forget that we live on a spinning rock in the middle of space and that one day we’re all going to die and our lives will mean absolutely nothing.

The Call Within is out on 28 August through Nonesuch.
