NUBIYAN TWIST | “SUGAR CANE” | REVIEW

– THE CHARM OFFENSIVE –

London’s (by way of Leeds) nu-jazz stalwarts Nubiyan Twist have returned with a prime slice of the sort of world-infused groove with which they’ve become synonymous.

Sugar Cane is a dynamically-imposing, rhythmically intimidating siren of a track that lulls you in with treacly-sweet melodies, only to start tossing you around on choppy, syncopated waves of Brazilian percussion.

Just when you think you’re back to safe-sailing, in comes the tidal wave (3:29) of horns, Tom Excell’s sick guitar lines and Finn Booth’s crystal-clear ride.

To call it a return to form would be to imply they’d ever left.

The track comes from the band’s recently released full-length, Jungle Run, out on Wormfood Records.

More From This Week’s Mix:
