– GUERRILLA WARFARE –
Nothing you read in this review matters except the following sentence.
Keleketla! is a project headed up by Coldcut, but featuring contributions from Tenderlonious, (the late, great) Tony Allen, Shabaka Hutchings, Joe Armon-Jones and Yugen Blakrok (amongst many others).
When my three-year-old daughter tells me she’s had a dream that involved princesses and ice cream and unicorns and popcorn, I’m going to tell her that I know how excited that must have made her because I’ve now heard a track that features Coldcut and Tenderlonious and Tony Allen all together.
Future Toyi Toyi is the first single signposting a project which originated at a recording session in Soweto organised by Rangoato Hlasane and Malose Malahlela of Johannesburg’s Keleketla! library.
Ninja Tune electronic duo, Coldcut (known to their mums as Matt Black and Jonathan More) then took the recordings and asked all their bessie mates in London and South Africa to feature on it.
The result is a track that bristles with awesome African energy as well as the nu-cool cred of the fabled London jazz scene.
A portion of Keleketla!’s profits will be donated to the charity In Place of War, which aims to utilise the creative arts to help current sites of conflict. So, I guess that sorta matters more than what I wrote at the top.
But did I mention Tony Allen’s on it?
