DJ JENIFA | “MLL” | REVIEW

– THE PEACEFUL PROTEST –

If you’ve not heard of DJ Jenifa before, don’t worry… none of us had until last week’s surprise album drop, Jag Trax. Alas, Ms. Jenifa turned out to be Essex Producer, Gold Panda (or Derwin Schlecker as he’s known to his Mum) in disguise.

Alas, he needn’t have obscured his identity because Jag Trax is actually really good; standout track MLL in particular.

While the album is, in the author’s own words “heavily inspired by sampling culture” and is mostly comprised of tracks with single, looped samples, kick drums and an MPC, there is a real songlike structure to MLL akin to some of the best moments on Four Tet’s 2017 album New Energy.

It’s the sort of track you could as easily work to, as work-out to, as wind-down to and it’s not often that can be said of a track.

Jag Trax is out now.

More From This Week’s Mix:
