BROOKLYN FUNK ESSENTIALS: FUNK AIN’T OVA | REVIEW

– THE CHARM OFFENSIVE –

Everyone’s favourite acid-funk experimentalists return with only a sixth album in the band’s 25+ year history and Lati Kronlund and co. are, understandably, in a celebratory mood on Funk Ain’t Ova.

Since 1993, the diverse collective’s been at the forefront of the modern funk movement, instilling a decades-old genre with enough youthful energy and eclecticism to keep it fresh and vital, all the while earning a fan base who are evangelical about the band’s live shows.

This track, which would have kicked-off Side 2 of an old-school cassette, is a P-Funk-on-speed, space jam supernova which sprinkles glittery electronics all over Anna Brooks’ and Alison Limerick’s on-point vocals.

Kronlund’s bass is ever-prominent while trumpeter Iwan Van Hetten accents tastefully and drummer Hux Flux Nettermalm breaks out all the classic chops. To paraphrase guitarist, Desmond Foster on one notable breakdown ‘this shit is cool’.

Funk Ain’t Ova comes from the album Stay Good which is out now through Dorado Records.
