THE FUTURE-JAZZ DIGEST | 11 OCTOBER 2019

G. LOVE & SPECIAL SAUCE | HEMLOCK ERNST & KENNY SEGAL | MATTHEW HALSALL | MANU DELGADO | ELSA HEWITT

Hello again friends, freaks and fans of future-jazz.

In the week that Extinction Rebellion brought London to a stand-still, 45 RPM brings you five tracks that are guaranteed to stop you in yours.

Helping us stretch into the whole exercise like a good yoga session on a public road are Philadelphia hip-hop/blues legends G. Love & Special Sauce. Their latest release – nay, renaissance – ‘Go Crazy’ is a funky, phat tune and that’s why it’s your Charm Offensive.

Packing considerably more punch than a ‘nose-ringed crusty’ jibe from the UK’s Moron in Command is Hemlock Ernst & Kenny Segal’s ‘Down’. The rapper/producer duo have created a track that ducks and weaves and lands several knock-out blows. That’s your Military Coup.

Your Peaceful Protest choice this week comes in the form of Matthew Halsall’s ‘Distant Land’. The jazz/world piece is cool and confident and as classy as Cumberbatch’s flat cap.

Your penultimate track is as mad as a Tory Lord taking to the front line in just his dressing gown. Manu Delago’s Zeitgeber is a frantic jazz/rock crossover that spins and stabs with gleeful abandon and that’s why it’s your Guerrilla Warfare selection.

Finally, your Quiet Riot this week comes from Elsa Hewitt. Her ‘melanchonica’ track, Tiny Dancer is as beautiful as a lesbian wedding on Westminster Bridge… even if it was a staged one.

So, if any of that could be your perfect soundtrack to impending apocalypse then, by all means, hear more here…

G. LOVE & SPECIAL SAUCE: GO CRAZY
HEMLOCK ERNST & KENNY SEGAL: DOWN
MATTHEW HALSALL: DISTANT LAND
MANU DELGADO: ZEITGEBER
ELSA HEWITT: TINY DANCER
