SCRIMSHIRE | ABDULAZIZ LOUIS | MARIA CHIARA ARGIRÒ | RŌNIN ARKESTRA | MARCELL
Hello again friends, freaks and fans of future-jazz music of the kind that wouldn’t know its silly mid-on from its short leg and would, frankly, imagine both phrases to be code for the sort of depraved sexual acts that the kids apparently get up to on Tinder these days.
Have I got some bangers for you!
Opening the batting with the safest of hands is Scrimshire. The multiple-label boss and equally talented DJ and producer’s jazz/funk opus The Socials is our Charm Offensive this week.
Taking the game to the opposition is Abdulaziz Louis – a Kuwaiti singer who blends sounds from around the world with traditional folk music from his homeland. His track Nijma Mashoura is our Military Coup.
Playing the vital role of all-rounder is Maria Chiara Argirò, whose track Nautilus is a simply stunning achievement that, like a Ben Stokes World Cup Final performance has everything (including six ‘overthrows’ for getting in the way). The Italy-born, London-based pianist provides our Peaceful Protest.
Throwing in some leg-spinners, some-doosras, some googlies and some god knows what else is our Guerilla Warfare selection. This week, that comes from the Mark de Clive Lowe-lead Japanese jazz/electronic supergroup Rōnin Arkestra.
And finally, bouncing us out is Indonesian king of the swingers, Marcell. His track Adventure of a Lifetime is our not-so-Quiet Riot this week and my review should not be read by anyone who’s ever ‘had a moment’ listening to Fix You. You know who you are.
So, if any of those tracks sounds like the perfect accompaniment to your tea break, lunch break or simply your afternoon in the sun please hear more here…
SCRIMSHIRE: THE SOCIALS
ABDULAZIZ LOUIS: NIJMA MASHOURA
MARIA CHIARA ARGIRÒ: NAUTILUS
RŌNIN ARKESTRA: COSMIC COLLISIONS
MARCELL: ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME
