THE NU-JAZZ DIGEST | 24 MAY 2019

GODTET | TYLER, THE CREATOR | EABS FEAT. TENDERLONIOUS | HACKNEY COLLIARY BAND FEAT. ANGELIQUE KIDJO & ROUNDHOUSE CHOIR | ROSE DROLL

Hello again friends, freaks and fans of nu-jazz music of the kind that never, ever, ever cries in public. What, that? I had something in my eye.

Starting us off this week – and laughing so hard they cry – is Sydney funk quintet GODTET. Their track, Comedy, leads us off with the Charm Offensive.

Coming in second and dialling up the ‘ugly crying’ is Odd Future frontman Tyler, the Creator. He brings us our Military Coup in the shape of his EDM-rap mélange, WHAT’S GOOD.

Silently snivelling with our Peaceful Protest this week is Polish hip-hop / jazz collective EABS. Their track (with Tenderlonious) Przywitanie Słońca explores some of the deeper recesses of their country’s history to quite stunning effect.

And bringing the sort of wailing that involves snot flying everywhere and no shortage of melodramatic hand waving is a collaboration between the Hackney Colliery Band, Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo and Camden venue The Roundhouse’s very own choir. Their track Mm Mm forms our Guerrilla Warfare selection.

Finally, crying the sort of tears that make good gifs is San Francisco experimentalist (with the emphasis on the word ‘mental’) Rose Droll. Her track Hush rounds us off for this collection.

So, if any of that gets you feeling a bit misty eyed, go ahead and get involved…

TYLER, THE CREATOR: WHAT’S GOOD
EABS FEAT. TENDERLONIOUS: PRZYWITANIE SŁOŃCA
HACKNEY COLLIARY BAND FEAT. ANGELIQUE KIDJO & ROUNDHOUSE CHOIR: MM MM
