THE NU-JAZZ DIGEST | 5 APRIL 2019

DJEUHDJOAH & LIEUTENANT NICHOLSON | BLACK FLOWER | JPEGMAFIA | THE COMET IS COMING | KENDRICK SCOTT ORACLE

Hello again friends, freaks and fans of nu-jazz music of the kind that can “get a bit repetitive”… but only ‘cos you play it all the time!

There’s a bit of a theme that comes through this week’s selections regarding names. We’ve got some musicians with great ones (hello, DjeuhDjoah), some with rubbish ones (we salute you, Lieutenant Nicholson). Some blokes have excellent real ones but lazy nicknames (King Shabaka) and some artists have names that have caused controversy in and of themselves (Black Flower).

And then Ken Barlow gets a mention. Turns out he’s potentially more street than you might have first thought.

Each track is a banger, though, whether you’re into afro-funk from Martinique, electronic psychedelia from outer-space or Ethiopian jazz from the far-flung climes of Belgium, there’s something in there for everyone.

Except if you just like Oasis. In which case, you’re a cretin.

Have a lovely stay now, won’t you…

DJEUHDJOAH & LIEUTENANT NICHOLSON | “EL NINO”
BLACK FLOWER | “FUTURE FLORA”
JPEGMAFIA | “THE WHO”
THE COMET IS COMING | “SUPER ZODIAC”
KENDRICK SCOTT ORACLE | “>>>>>>>>>VOICES”
