NUBIYAN TWIST | MAHALIA | RICHARD HOUGHTEN | KASSA OVERALL | HANIA RANI
Here’s the deal. I’m late for a gig. I’m sure you all understand. I’m also super late with getting this blog live. That is what it is.
BUT the music’s chosen, the reviews are done, so here’s the deal… you get your reviews and your new music recommendations today (see links below) without all the fluffy, irreverent introduction. And then you come back tomorrow to catch up on the bollocks I usually put in here.
You get the full 45 experience, I get to go to my gig, my website gets double the number of hits, I sell out BIG time and start putting ads all over the place. Everybody’s gutted. But only after everybody’s briefly elated. How does that sound?
Good? Wonderful. Here we go…
UPDATE: So, the day after the night before, here’s the update you were waiting for with baited breath no doubt.
This week’s selection of nu-jazz new music is an especially good one in my opinion. Full of bangers.
We start off with a fail-safe offering from London jazz-scene heavyweights Nubiyan Twist and swiftly follow with future heavyweight, Mahalia and Sir Spyro’s grimey remix of her most recent release, Do Not Disturb.
The week’s quieter – but no less noisy – offerings come in the form of new Gondwana Records artist, Hania Rani, whose Eden manages to transform a limited palate into a piece so full of vibrancy it’ll make your head swim and Richard Houghten’s warm and approachable (and therefore appropriately named) Amigos.
And providing the Guerilla Warfare choice is Kassa Overall’s (pictured) La Casa Azul – a breathtaking feat of hip-hop / jazz alchemy that features the transcendent trumpet playing of the late, great Roy Hargrove.
Click the links below to navigate between them. Enjoy…
NUBIYAN TWIST | “SUGAR CANE”
MAHALIA | “DO NOT DISTURB (SIR SPYRO REMIX)”
RICHARD HOUGHTEN | “AMIGOS”
KASSA OVERALL | “LA CASA AZUL”
HANIA RANI | “EDEN”
